SYRACUSE — Wawasee Community School Corporation announced the appointment of Jessica Barkby as the new assistant principal of Wawasee Middle School, following formal approval at the June school board meeting.
Barkby brings over 20 years of classroom experience and a demonstrated passion for student success, teacher support and collaborative leadership, according to a news release from Wawasee. Most recently, she has served as a second-grade teacher at Middlebury Elementary School, where she represented her school on several key district committees, including the Math Curriculum Committee, the Guiding Coalition Committee and the Curriculum Coordinating Council.
Barkby also served as a mentor for new teachers, a presenter at professional learning conferences and the president of the Middlebury Teachers Association. During her tenure as association president, she led contract negotiations, supported teacher growth and helped navigate policy shifts, earning a reputation for her steady leadership and student-centered approach, the release states.
“Jessica’s experience, passion and ability to connect with others made her stand out,” said Jaime Nathaniel, principal of Wawasee Middle School. “She brings a thoughtful and strategic perspective to education, and I know she will be a tremendous asset to our staff, students and families.”
Beyond the classroom, Barkby has also demonstrated her leadership in the community, currently serving as the girls director for the Northridge Lacrosse Club. She manages operations, recruitment and player development for the club while continuing to champion youth engagement and development.
Barkby holds a Master’s degree in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University and earned her administrator’s license through Purdue University.
She and her husband live in Middlebury and are parents of three children, one of whom will attend Purdue University this fall.
Barkby said she is excited to bring her energy and enthusiasm to Wawasee and looks forward to building strong partnerships within the school community.
