Wawasee 4th, Warsaw 5th In NLC Girls Golf TournamentWINONA LAKE — Belle Brunner shot an 82 Saturday to help Wawasee place fourth at the Northern Lakes Conference girls golf championship staged at Stonehenge Golf Club.
Brunner fired rounds of 40 and 42.
“I played pretty good on the front,” said Brunner, who finished as the sixth medalist. “On No. 17, I had a rough hole. I hit it in the water with my first shot.”
Brunner’s day featured no birdies. But she did card a number of pars, including on No. 18.
Saturday was sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s and not a great deal of wind. But Stonehenge still presented a challenge.
“I feel like there’s a lot of visual intimidation when you get up to hit the ball,” said Brunner. “There’s water and there’s trees.”
How do you overcome those obstacles?
“You just take it one shot at a time,” said Brunner, who shot a season-best 78 Aug. 17 in the Wawasee Invitational at South Shore Golf Club in Syracuse.
Led by medalist Summer Stilton’s 75, NorthWood (317) set tournament and school records in winning its eighth straight NLC team title. The Panthers were followed by Northridge (343), Concord (357), Wawasee (359), Warsaw (377), Elkhart Memorial (388), Plymouth (397) and Goshen (427).
Wawasee was also represented by Tate Cowan (91), Jadison Rostochak (98), Taylor Cripe (88) and Valerie Haessig (101).
Warsaw’s top NLC tournament player was Delaney Byron (89). Other Tigers were Marie Frazzetta (94), Grayson Kilburn (92), Sydney Lancaster (102) and Brooklyn Fitzgerald (123).
Wawasee is slated to play a road match against Whitko today, while Warsaw hosts Whitko Tuesday at Stonehenge.
The Warriors and Tigers are to play in the Warsaw Sectional at Stonehenge Saturday.
