Warsaw’s Bricker, Zartman Named Indiana All-Stars

Posted

It was clear from the moment Joslyn Bricker and Brooke Zartman took the floor as freshmen that the duo would continue the great history of Lady Tiger basketball. Four years later, they’ve rewritten it. With their remarkable high school careers now finished, both players added one more accolade, perhaps the grandest of them all: being named Indiana All-Stars.

In a press release sent out on Wednesday morning, both Bricker and Zartman were among the 12 girls from across the state selected to the team, joining Center Grove’s Miss Basketball Gracyn Gilliard. Bricker was also one of four players selected to the Academic All-State team. The team will be coached by Lake Central’s Joe Huppenthal. See the full team below.

Their head coach at Warsaw, Lenny Krebs, was thrilled when he found out.

“I’m so excited for these two kids to experience this together because they’ve been through so much together,” he said. “They’ve been playing together since elementary school, and for them to represent the Warsaw community one last time as all-stars, I’m thrilled for them. They’ve put in so much work, and to see it pay off, to know that they accomplished that goal, I feel so much joy for them.”

It’s the second time in school history that Warsaw has put two ladies on the Indiana All-Star team, as Bricker and Zartman join the 1991 duo of Liza Reed and Dana Creighton. Furthermore, with Brooke Winchester being named an all-star last season, it is now the second time in school history that three Lady Tigers have been selected to the team in a two-year span. Angie Johnson was selected in 1990.

“A lot of coaches go their entire careers without coaching an All-Star. It’s not lost on me how special it is,” Krebs said. “It says a lot about this program and these girls and how much they’ve put in. It’s incredibly special for Warsaw basketball and the Warsaw community.”

The resume of both players speaks for itself. Making an impact in all four years, the 101 games played by each player is a school record. Zartman started in all 101 of those games, which is also the most in Lady Tiger history. Bricker leaves the program as the all-time leading scorer with 1,859 points, as well as the owner of the single-game record with 43. She also set the school record for field goals in a game (17) in that effort. Bricker finishes her career having scored in double figures in 81 of her last 82 games, including 20 points or more in 18 of the last 20.

Zartman is second in team history at 1,674 points and is the owner of a plethora of three-point records. She has the most makes in school history (381), most attempts (874) and best percentage (.436). She also has the top four single-season three point records. During this year’s Lady Tiger Tournament, she set a new single-game record with 10. Leading the state this season with 122 threes made, Zartman finished second all-time in career three pointers behind Olivia Nickerson of Twin Lakes’ 406.

“You knew it could be something special just by watching them. You could tell from an early age because of the drive they had. They were willing to do things that a lot of people are willing to do,” Krebs said. “To see them come in as freshmen and play at the level they played, only to just keep getting better. I’m honored to have played a small part in their journey.”

The eye-popping individual statistics are one thing, but they only tell half the story. Bricker and Zartman were at the forefront of a fantastic stretch of basketball for the Lady Tiger program. The team boasted an 82-19 record during the four years that the two players were on the team, including a run all the way to the state championship game last season. During their four years, the duo won all 28 Northern Lakes Conference games they played. However, with all of that success, there were still road bumps they had to navigate in order to achieve it.

“They realized what happens when you’re not connected and playing together. You go back to their sophomore year and the challenges they worked through. They made the decision that they were going to do whatever they had to do in order for the team to be successful, and you saw the result of that,” Krebs said. “That’s a tribute to the character of these kids. Sometimes that meant one was shooting more than the other, sometimes it meant taking a back seat for someone else. They were willing to do whatever it took to be successful.”

Being selected to the All-Star team gives Bricker and Zartman three more opportunities to play together before heading to play college ball at Butler and Miami (Ohio). The first of which will be on Wednesday, June 3 when the team plays an exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars. The pair know this game well, as they played on the other side of it last season. The All-Stars will then compete in a home-and-home against Kentucky on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6. The first game will be played in the Bluegrass State at a site to be announced. Saturday’s game will be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. All of these games are doubleheaders with the boys games to follow.

Despite these games marking the end of Bricker and Zartman’s high school careers, their impact will be felt in Warsaw for many years to come.

“All you have to do to see the impact they’ve left is to come see our elementary and middle school kids play. Talk to the kids and see how many want to be the next Brooke Zartman or the next Joslyn Bricker. They look up to these two young ladies,” Krebs said. “They want to mimic them in every way, shape and form because they realize how great these two have been, and they’ve shown them it's possible. These two girls have paved the way for other young ladies to achieve their dreams.”
