Cathy Suhany was recognized for 40 years of dedicated service to Warsaw Community Schools at the WCS Board of Trustees work session on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Suhany was recognized as part of the academic spotlight and received her 40-year pin from WCS Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert. She has worked for WCS as a school psychiatrist for 40 years. She also was recognized as the Indiana Association of School Psychologists 2015-16 Indiana School Psychologist of the Year.
Hoffert said to Suhany, “Congratulations and thank you for all that you do for Warsaw Community Schools. We appreciate you, we value you, and you are leaving an amazing legacy here.”
Suhany will also be featured in next week’s Tiger Tuesday post on social media.
In other business, Edgewood Middle School staff discussed their fledgling "Enabling the Future" group.
Through this program, the students, including Owen Lewis, built several prosthetic hands for Lewis to help with the limb difference in his left hand.
They partnered with Grace College for this project, and two professors came nearly every Friday to assist with their design. In the end, they assembled four different hands in four different sizes to accommodate for Lewis’ size as he grows.
Abbi Richcreek, Edgewood teacher, said, “Since he was a part of this process, he knows how to … fix his own, what parts he needs … We wanted to involve him to build his expertise in being able to assemble, fix and maintain.”
The story was featured on Bobby Bones’ podcast “Tell Me Something Good" and multiple local media outlets.
A mother in Indianapolis whose 14-year-old son has a similar limb difference to Lewis reached out to Richcreek after hearing about Lewis’ prosthetic to ask if they could make a hand for her son. The group mailed paper templates to Indianapolis to get his measurements, and plan to begin work on his prosthetic once they know his size.
