Warsaw Police Dept. Mourns Passing Of Retired K9 ‘Dax’A retired Warsaw Police Department K9 has died, according to the WPD’s Facebook.
Dax recently was retired from the department.
Born April 25, 2010, in Holland, he was a Belgian Malinois. He joined the WPD April 1, 2013, and was handled by Cpl. Phil Reed.
At 95 pounds, Dax was the largest K9 in Kosciusko County and served his entire career on the midnight shift, according to the WPD.
“It was always a site to see the small frame handler with one of the bigger Malinois dogs serving in law enforcement. However, the obedience, loyalty and love Dax displayed for Phil were undeniable,” the post states.
Dax assisted the WPD and other surrounding agencies in countless searches for narcotics and fleeing suspects. He could often be seen during public appearances showing off his skills of locating drugs, finding people, and bringing fleeing felons to justice.
On Sept. 5, Dax was taken out of service because of a diagnosis of brain cancer. He was no longer called upon to patrol the streets of Warsaw and was able to rest solely a member of the Reed family at home. WPD provided treatment for the cancer and Dax continued to fight the disease.
On Monday, during treatment, Dax suddenly took a turn for the worse, losing his fight with cancer.
The post states, “At the time of his passing, Warsaw’s K9 was surrounded by Cpl. Reed and his family. Please remember the Reed family during this difficult time.”
