Warsaw Man Gets 2-1/2 Years For Strangling Pregnant Girlfriend

A Warsaw man was sentenced to two and a half years in jail Thursday for strangling his pregnant girlfriend.

Kyle Logan Backus, 21, of 920 Anchorage Road, lot 42, Warsaw, appeared in front of Kosciusko Superior Court III Judge Joe Sutton and was handed a two and a half year sentence in Kosciusko County Jail for a Level 6 strangulation felony conviction, with two of those years suspended to formal probation. He was also convicted of a Class A misdemeanor domestic battery charge and received one year in KCJ suspended, but to run concurrently with the strangulation sentence.

Backus also is ordered to complete an anger management course, get evaluated for substance abuse issues and forfeit firearms for life.

The victim was pregnant at the time of this incident, and as part of the plea agreement a Level 5 felony charge of domestic battery to a pregnant woman was dismissed.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Warsaw police were told on June 3 that Backus and his girlfriend got into a disagreement and Backus spit in the woman’s face, pushed her against the wall and grabbed her throat until the woman’s face started changing colors. Backus then punched her legs and face, causing her nose to bleed.

Backus’ sentence is eligible to be served on work release, if he’s approved, but his attorney Tony Garza said his client has a pending case in Whitley County, so now that’s not possible.
