Warsaw Man Booked After Goshen ShootingA Warsaw man is being held on $100,000 bond in Elkhart County for allegedly pistol whipping and shooting a man who stole his fanny pack filled with illegal items.
Edward McKinley Liggins, 45, of 3762 W. Old 30, lot 630, Warsaw, was booked in the Elkhart County Jail Wednesday and faces charges for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony; felony battery committed with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony; pointing a firearm, a Level 6 felony; being a habitual offender, a charge enhancement; nonsupport of a dependant, a Class C felony; and contempt of court, a civil charge.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed April 8 in Elkhart County Superior Court I, on Feb. 5 officers with the Goshen Police Department responded to a report that a man had been shot.
Upon arrival, police spoke with a man and his girlfriend who said they went to an Elkhart County home to help a friend move a dresser in exchange for $10. The couple told police their friend had picked them up and taken to them to the home.
When the trio arrived at the home, according to court papers, their friend got out, went into the home, then shortly after waved them to come inside. As the couple exited the vehicle, their friend locked the car’s doors, according to the affidavit.
When the couple went inside, their friend slammed the front door shut and locked it. That is when, according to court papers, Liggins popped out of a another door in the residence with two 9 mm handguns in his hands and pointed one of them at the couple, asking them: “Remember me? Remember me?”
Liggins then allegedly struck the man over the head with one of the guns, and the man took off running. A chase ensued, and Liggins allegedly then shot the man in the leg behind the house while the woman was screaming for him to stop.
When police interviewed the other people present during the altercation, it was revealed that the victim admitted he had stolen a fanny pack containing illegal items about six months ago and that he knew Liggins was a known drug dealer. The man also said he had not seen Liggins since taking the fanny pack.
When police interviewed the homeowner where the incident occurred, the woman told police that the whole thing was a set up and the man who originally lured them there with the promise of $10 to help move a dresser came into the home after arriving and asked, “So how we going to do this?”
On Feb. 18, police interviewed Liggins while he was incarcerated in the St. Joseph County Jail, and according to the affidavit, Liggins initially denied any involvement in the shooting but eventually stated, “I wasn’t trying to kill him. I?just wanted to whoop him. I wanted to beat him up,” and that his actions were intended “just to scare him and hit him with it a couple times.”
According to court records, Liggins was convicted on March 7, 1995, with robbery, a Class C felony; on Jan. 20, 2018, for operating a vehicle as a habitual traffic violator, a Level 6 felony; and on Jan. 19, 2012, for non-support of a dependant, a Class C felony.
