Warsaw Man Arrested On OWI, Intimidation, Drug ChargesA Warsaw man is facing multiple charges after allegedly driving the wrong way drunk and threatening a police officer.
Douglas Paul Shuster, 53, of 3762 W. Old 30, apt. 700, Warsaw, is charged with intimidation, a Level 6 felony; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor; resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Dec. 17 and was released on his own recognizance.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on Dec. 16 a Warsaw Police Department officer was advised of a possible intoxicated driver in a dark passenger car who was driving on the wrong side of the road on East Market Street in Warsaw. The officer pulled onto North Scott Street, Warsaw, and observed the vehicle in front of the complainant’s vehicle. The officer saw the vehicle at the intersection of East Clark and North Cook streets, where a one-way road begins.
A Hyundai Eleantra proceeded to turn right on East Fort Wayne Street, Warsaw, traveling the wrong way on the one-way street. The officer then initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle.
The officer approached the driver, later identified as Shuster, with the reason for the stop. Shuster said he was trying to get back into town and didn’t realize he turned into a one-way street. While talking with Shuster, the officer allegedly detected alcohol on Shuster’s breath.?Shuster’s eyes were allegedly red and watery and his speech was slurred. When Shuster was asked for his driver’s license, he initially gave the officer his debit card.
The officer asked Shuster how much alcohol he had consumed the night before, according to the affidavit, and Shuster asked if he was being taken to jail. The officer asked Shuster if he would submit to a standardized field sobriety test, and Shuster initially didn’t give a decisive answer but later said he would. For safety and weather reasons, Shuster was transported to the Kosciusko County Jail.
When Shuster was searched, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found.
While at the jail, Shuster was asked how much alcohol he had consumed and he said he was drinking at his brother’s house and had a couple beers. The first two breath samples were insufficient.
Shuster then started yelling he was not going to blow into the machine again. The officer verified Shuster was not going to attempt it again and Shuster continued to refuse.
The officer transported him to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital. The officer was granted a search warrant and escorted Shuster to the LKH lab for a blood draw. As two other officers arrived, Shuster got irritated and started yelling they weren’t going to take his blood. The search warrant was executed.
While an officer was talking to Shuster during the blood draw, Shuster told the officer he was going to kill the officer.
Shuster was previously convicted of battery against a public safety official in Kosciusko County on Nov. 30, 2021.
