A Warsaw man is facing charges after he allegedly chased a neighbor with a knife.
William G. McCleary, 61, of 201 S. Detroit St., #364, Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:55 p.m. Thursday and faces charges for intimidation with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony; battery, a Class A misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Monday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, on Thursday Warsaw police responded to a report of battery involving a knife.
Upon arrival in the area, police saw McCleary following another man on foot and gave several commands for McCleary to stop. McCleary eventually stopped and put his hands in the air and told police the knife was in his pocket, according to court papers. He pulled the knife from his pocket and dropped it on the ground and told police that the man he was following was knocking on his neighbor’s door and he did not like it. Police reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from McCleary.
When police spoke to the victim, according to the affidavit, the man told police he was trying to get his 3-year-old daughter to sleep when he heard a loud noise coming from the apartment above, so he went up and knocked on the door to ask if the residents could turn their music down.
However, McCleary popped out from down the hall and yelled at him to stop knocking on the door, then punched the man in the chest and pulled him by his shirt and brandished a knife, according to court papers.
The man told police he was hurt from being punched and feared McCleary was going to hurt him with the knife so he called 911 and ran outside. The man said McCleary continued to follow him until law enforcement arrived.
McCleary’s bond was set at $5,250 and a no contact order was issued.
