A Warsaw man is facing charges for allegedly battering his pregnant girlfriend in the presence of children.
Christopher John Courtois, 28, of 1710 Latta St., Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 5:12 p.m. Sunday and faces charges for domestic battery to a pregnant woman, a Level 5 felony; domestic battery with a child under 16 present, a Level 6 felony; and invasion of privacy, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, at 4:16 p.m. Sunday, Warsaw police were dispatched a home where they met with a woman who said she is 21 weeks pregnant and was just battered by Courtois.
Police observed several scratches on the neck, cheeks and forehead of the woman, according to court records, along with blood around her mouth and above her right eye lid. The woman told police she had felt pain in her face and behind her ear, where she was allegedly punched by Courtois.
When police spoke with the three children present in the home, according to the affidavit, they said they saw Courtois throw the woman into a wall, cover the woman’s mouth with his hand, yell at her then lay her on the floor. The children said they got scared and ran upstairs at this point, according to court papers.
When police spoke with Courtois, he said he had gotten into a loud verbal argument with the woman, but that the woman had packed her belongings and left without anything physical happening between the two. Police then observed blood on Courtois’ palm, to which Courtois said that was from a bloody nose he had earlier. According to the affidavit, police inspected Courtois’ nose and did not find any traces of blood.
Courtois had been previously convicted of a misdemeanor domestic battery charge against the same victim in 2016.
A protective order was issued by Marion County courts and served by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office to Courtois on Saturday.
