Warsaw Library Holds Preliminary Meeting For Renovations

Posted

Warsaw Community Public Library held its first preliminary determination hearing for a proposed renovation project during its regular board meeting on Oct. 20.
The hearing was held to assess the need for the library’s first major renovation in 30 years. The project will focus on three key areas: infrastructure, accessibility and safety.
As an important part of the community, the library hopes the renovation will make the building a more welcoming and secure space for all visitors. Officials emphasized the library’s evolving role as a neutral, safe space to help address social isolation that has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project would allocate 60% of funding toward infrastructure needs, including replacing outdated equipment, addressing visible deterioration throughout the building and improving the exterior.
Another 20% would go toward enhancing accessibility. Plans include reconfiguring the main entrance so it opens onto the second floor, making it easier for people with mobility issues or young children to access the building.
The final 20% would be dedicated to safety improvements to ensure all patrons feel secure while inside or entering the facility.
A second determination hearing will be held at the next board meeting.
During the regular meeting, two library staff members were recognized for their service anniversaries. Cheryl Wise, youth services, celebrated eight years with the library, and Melissa Skinner, cataloging, marked 17 years.
The board also welcomed Heather Housel, who joined the team on Oct. 6 as a new part-time youth clerk.
Linda Francis was recently nominated for the Difference Is You conference for her work in expanding translation services at the library. While she did not win, the board expressed pride in her contributions and the positive impact she has made at WCPL.
The traveling exhibit Americans and the Holocaust, organized by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will be on display at WCPL for five weeks, from June 20 to July 24, 2026.
The library is one of only two locations in the state selected to host the exhibit. Organizers plan to feature Irene Miller, a Holocaust survivor and author, who will speak about her experiences and her book.
The board also approved the library’s 2026 budget.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17.
