Warsaw Distance Runners Represent at All Levels

Posted

The strength of Warsaw's distance-running community was on full display this past week, with standout performances ranging from elementary school championships to NCAA Division I competition and state championship racing. The breadth of talent throughout the Warsaw pipeline continues to reinforce the community's reputation as one of Indiana's strongest distance-running programs. More than 300 runners competed in the Elementary Cross Country Championships on Wednesday. In the girls 1.5-mile race, Palmer Miller of Leesburg captured the title in a course-record 9:44. Kinsley Purdy (10:09) and JoJo Pixton (10:13) also finished under the previous course record, giving the race three of the fastest performances in event history. In the boys race, Leesburg swept the top three positions as Ryland Wernle led teammates Isaias Medina and John Warner across the finish line. In the third and fourth-grade division, Alice Neher and Logan Moore claimed individual championships.

Warsaw's influence was also evident on the collegiate stage as five former Warsaw Community High School runners competed for NCAA Division I programs. At the prestigious Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame, former Tigers Joey Rastrelli, Jackson Gackenheimer, and Tyler Swartz raced against national competition. Running for Indiana University, Rastrelli served as the Hoosiers' fifth scorer with a 5K time of 17:15 as Indiana placed fifth overall, just behind nationally ranked Clemson. Gackenheimer recorded a top-25 finish in the open race with a time of 25:13 for 8K, while Swartz covered the Gold Race 8K course in 25:07 competing for Valparaiso. At the highly-competitive Louisville Classic, former Warsaw teammates Tyler Mimnaugh of Wright State and Andrew Potter of Evansville found themselves racing side by side once again, finishing in nearly identical times of 25:45.0 and 25:45.9, respectively.

Back in high school competition, Warsaw traveled to Oxbow Park for the Northern Lakes Conference Championships. Dani Rastrelli led the Lady Tigers with a runner-up finish and all-conference honors, helping Warsaw secure second place as a team behind Northridge. Cece Scheetz-Holland continued her strong season by placing sixth and earning all-conference recognition, while Matilda Granger joined her on the all-conference team with another outstanding performance. Savannah Purdy and Eden Gackenheimer completed Warsaw's scoring five, followed by Isadora Vega and Kyla Transparenti. The Warsaw boys placed third in the conference standings. Jaxon Lehman earned all-conference honors with a 10th-place finish, while sophomore Luke Vanderbie continued his breakout season by running a personal-best 16:53 and finishing 16th overall. Nolan Stump, Eli Swinehart, and Keenan Lyons rounded out the Tigers' scoring lineup, with Jack Boggs and Jaden Flamm following closely behind.

Lakeview and Edgewood middle school runners traveled to Terre Haute for the Indiana Middle School State Championships. The highly regarded Lakeview girls team narrowly missed a podium finish, placing sixth among 38 teams statewide with 231 points. Competing against perennial powers Westfield, Zionsville, Hamilton Southeastern, Carmel, and champion Maple Creek, Lakeview finished just 18 points shy of fifth place. London Kinsey led the squad with a personal-best 11:32, followed by fellow seventh graders Londyn Pixton and Pipa Hill. Franki Rastrelli and Kenzie Warner completed the scoring five, while Avery Davis, Evelyn Porter, Lucy Purdy, and Ava Schini added depth to a promising team.  The local spotlight continued in the boys championship race, where Edgewood eighth-grader Nivin Viswanadha delivered another personal best performance. Locked in a battle with eventual champion Josh Bodach of Northwood, Viswanadha made a decisive move with approximately 400 meters remaining and briefly surged into the lead. The race came down to the final stretch, with Viswanadha finishing a mere 1.1 seconds behind the winner to claim state runner-up honors. Brother, Neal Viswanadha, added another highlight by running a personal best and earning a podium position with a 17th-place finish. Edgewood's continued improvement was reflected in its 15th-place team finish. Owen Casey, Kaden Willard, and Victor Bianco completed the team's scoring lineup, with Lucas Rhoades and Saul Harmon also contributing.  Lakeview's boys squad placed 28th overall and was led by Magnus Granger, Asher Brenneman, and Krishna Puthucode. Elias King, Henry Gough, Theo Yoder, and Oliver Grossman also represented the school well at the state meet.

From elementary school course records to state podium finishes and Division I competition, Warsaw-area runners continue to excel at every level. With talented young athletes emerging through Leesburg, Lakeview, and Edgewood programs while former Tigers continue their success on collegiate teams, the future of distance running in Warsaw remains exceptionally bright.
