Warren H. Tatter Sr., 82, passed away at 2:33 a.m. Sept. 9, 2012, in his residence.
He was born March 2, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to Gustav Jr. and Grace Balogh Tatter. On June 6, 1954, he married Shirley Kirkbride, who survives.
A Warsaw resident since 1935, he faithfully served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy aboard the USNS Geiger and USNS Sturgis. He was honorably discharged Dec. 20, 1954, after three years and 11 months of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where he served in the choir and on various committees. Music was an important part of his life and he sang for several years in a barbershop quartet and he was a former member of the Chain-O-Lakes Barbershop Chorus. He was also active in shooting sports and was an endowment life member of the National Rifle Association, a life member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association and a member of the Kosko Gun Club shooting trap and skeet in the winter league. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and gardening.
He was active in the Kosciusko County Republican Party, where he served as a poll worker and precinct committeeman for several years. He was a Kosciusko County Councilman from 1990-94 for district three. He served on the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents since 1982, where he held the office of president several times. In 2011, he was appointed as the Kosciusko County GOP Man of the Year.
Also surviving are two sons, Warren Jr. (and spouse Debbie) Tatter, Rochester, and Brian Tatter, Port Charlotte, Fla.; a daughter, Diane Tatter, Goshen; three grandchildren: Derek (and spouse Maggie) Tatter, Carmel; Adam Tatter, Rochester; and Danielle Stewart, Fort Wayne; a great-granddaughter, Sabrina Tatter, Carmel; a sister, Millicent (and spouse Arnold) Spilly, Carmel; and a brother, Milton (and spouse Karen) Tatter, Loveland, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Christopher Marshall.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Warsaw, with Pastor Dave Hummel officiating. Burial will be in the Tatter Family Lot, Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
