A Wabash man is facing a criminal recklessness charge after he shot himself in the hand while trying to clean his gun.
Skyler Jacob Winget, 24, Wabash, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday and faces a Level 6 felony charge of criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon and a Class B misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Friday in Kosciusko Circuit Court, on Jan. 23 Warsaw police responded to a house in reference to a person with a hand injury. Upon arrival, Winget said he accidentally shot himself in his left hand while he was trying to disassemble the gun to clean it.
The bullet, according to police reports, appeared to have entered his left hand in the middle of the palm and exited the fleshy part near the heel of the palm and wrist.
Police obtained a search warrant for the home, and discovered four weapons were in the home, along with three plastic baggies that were empty, as well as one corner-tied baggie containing marijuana, according to the affidavit.
Another person was present when the gun went off and told police he was sitting on a couch left of Winget in the direction of where the barrel of the gun was pointed, according to court papers.
Winget’s bond was set at $5,250.
