Voter Apathy

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I worked as a poll worker last week for the first time and was very glad I did. It is a privilege and an honor to be able to do this and to vote.

I was very, very disappointed at the low percentage of those turned out to vote. I worked at St. Anne's, and in order to even come close to a 30 percent turnout, we had to count the absentee ballots. I know this was not a big presidential election, that is no excuse for not doing your part.

With as bad as things have gotten in this country for so very many people, what was your excuse for not coming out to exercise your freedom to vote? How can you in good conscience not vote when men and women in the armed services are laying down their lives every day for you and I to remain safe and have the ability to be able to do this? You can give lots and lots of excuses when you are perfectly able to go out and do it, but in my opinion, you are showing dishonor for the ultimate sacrifice so many wonderful people have paid. That doesn't make it any easier for their family members and close friends to work through the grief process they must endure because of a terrible loss.

I am not happy with what has been done behind our backs to this country. I will pray for the new people being sent into the political battlefield because we send honest, moral, upright new people there that many, many times wind up corrupted almost immediately. We have gotten away from the reason this country was founded, from the Constitution upon which it was built, and away from the morals we should be living by and teaching our children. God help us all!

Please get involved and stay involved. Things have gotten like they are because the majority of people didn't make the effort to exercise their right to vote and be a watchdog over the corruption that now exists. Are you mad about the state of this country? I encourage you to channel the energy from your anger in a positive direction and take action to solve the problems.
