MENTONE – After raising over $96,000 for the families of those injured and killed Oct. 30 while boarding a school bus in Fulton County, the Valley Strong fundraiser has ended.
Mike Yazel, Mentone Fire Department chief, said they are now dispersing the monies to the families involved.
“We would like to thank the community for all they have donated in money and time,” he said.
Alyssa Shepherd, 24, the driver who allegedly struck the children while driving past the bus, faces three counts of reckless homicide and one count of passing a stopped school bus resulting in injury after speeding past a bus stop arm, hitting four children and killing three of them: 9-year-old Alivia Stahl and twins Xzavier and Mason Ingle, 6.
The fourth victim, Maverik Lowe, 11, who is not related to the three other children, recovered in a Fort Wayne hospital before being sent home in late November, but is still unable to walk.
The three children killed were students at Mentone Elementary School, and Lowe was a Tippecanoe Valley Middle School student.
