Valley Drops Hammer In Final Match To Beat Peru

PERU – The Tippecanoe Valley wrestling team knocked off the defending Three Rivers Conference and sectional champions Wednesday.

The Vikings won 37-36 at Peru. They were down 36-31 with one match to go. That’s when freshman Brandon Hammer (182 pounds) earned a pin in just 35 seconds to give Valley the one-point victory. 

Drake Montelongo (113 pounds), Branson McBrier (155 pounds), Jacob Eherenman (143 pounds), and Tyler Nine (220 pounds) picked up wins by fall for the Vikings.

Valley’s Luis Castillo (138 pounds) won 12-1 by major decision, while Jon Humes (160 pounds) won a 6-0 decision.

“This was a total team win as every one of our wrestlers left it on the mat,” said Valley wrestling coach Kyler Kearby. “Very proud of our kids.” 

The Vikings will compete Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Maconaquah Invite.



Triton Picks Up HNAC Road Win

BOURBON – The Triton girls basketball team earned its first road win of the year Wednesday. 

Triton won 38-22 in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game against LaVille. 

The Lady Trojans’ defense was stalwart, holding LaVille to just seven points in the first half.

Triton took an 18-7 lead into the third quarter. While the Lady Trojans scored just four points in the third, they rebounded with a 16-point fourth quarter to seal the double-digit victory. 

Delanie Groves led Triton (2-8, 1-0 HNAC) with 10 points, while Taren Yates had seven. 

Julia Hall led all scorers with 11 points for LaVille (3-5, 0-1 HNAC).

Triton will play Saturday at 4 p.m. at Knox in more HNAC action.

Manchester Splits Swim Meet With Pioneer

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester boys team won a home swim meet over Pioneer, while the Lady Squires lost to the Lady Panthers Tuesday.

The boys won 69-66, while the girls lost 91-69.

On the boys side, Manchester’s Parker York led by taking first in four events. 

He won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16, and the 500 freestyle (5:59.85).

He also was part of the Squires’ winning 200 medley relay team (2:08.59), and their first-place 200 freestyle relay team (2:03.91).

On the girls side, Halle Briner and Cora Barnett led Manchester by winning three events each. 

Both were on the Lady Squires’ winning 200-yard medley relay team, which finished in 2:12.49.

Briner also won the 100 butterfly (1:01.52) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.89).

Barnett won the 200 IM (2:34.28), and the 500 freestyle (7:04.58). 

Manchester will compete today at 5:30 p.m. at Maconaquah.
