Nye Youth Cabin may well be closed much of this year because of an onslaught of upcoming utility work on North Buffalo Street just south of Center Lake.
Upcoming utility work marks one of the first visible signs of the upcoming Buffalo Street project that will eventually include residential, commercial development as well as improvements to the park area along the lake.
Warsaw Parks and Recreation Superintendent Larry Plummer said they are no longer taking reservations for Nye for the time being because North Buffalo street is the main access to the cabin.
The move was made over whether or not the building will be accessible during the work, Plummer said.
Buffalo Street is the main route to the cabin, which is on the shores of Center Lake.
A variety of utility work could continue well through the summer.
Plummer said they will be referring people who would have rented the cabin to instead consider using the Firemen’s Building, which is slightly bigger and has a full kitchen.
The first utility work related to Buffalo Street project will involve gas lines extending along Canal and south along North Detroit to McDonalds.
That work will involve boring rather than opening up a trench to access lines, Plummer said.
Very little of the work will be directly under the road, but Plummer said he was unsure whether traffic on Canal Street would be affected.
Work on the gas line could begin later this month, Plummer said.
Some who have current reservations for the cabin will be moved to the Firemen’s Building, he said.
