TVHS Invites Community To Building Trades Open House

AKRON — Tippecanoe Valley High School invites community members to its annual Building Trades Open House on Sunday, May 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 1210 N. CR 700W, Warsaw.
The event offers an opportunity for the public to tour this year’s student-built home and see firsthand the skills and craftsmanship developed through the program, according to a news release from Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation.
This year’s Building Trades class features 12 students who have spent the school year gaining hands-on construction experience. Through the program, students not only learn trade skills, but also develop problem-solving abilities, teamwork and a work ethic.
Under the guidance of Building Trades instructor Wes Backus, students completed the program’s first-ever “Barndominium” — a 4,720-square-foot home that showcases both innovative design and technical skill, the release states. The project includes a spacious, open-concept living room, dining area and kitchen, along with a loft, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a mechanical room, office and laundry room. A small walk-in pantry is tucked under the stairs.
Students also gained significant experience working with a variety of materials, particularly metal. They installed metal roofing and siding, including Board and Batten metal siding, and completed the entire interior of the shop area using metal materials. Additionally, they installed duraplate on the mechanical wall, further expanding their exposure to industry-relevant techniques.
Beyond construction skills, students in the program have the opportunity to earn nationally recognized NCCER certifications in construction through a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College in Fort Wayne. These certifications provide graduates with a strong foundation for careers in the trades or continued education in the field.
“The students worked hard all year,” said Backus. “I hope they enjoyed the experience and learned skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. They should be proud of what they accomplished in a short amount of time.”
The open house is free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend, tour the home and meet the students behind this project.
