Truck Goes Off Ice-Covered Road Into PondWINONA LAKE – A pickup truck slid off an ice-covered road into a pond Wednesday morning.

At 11:17 a.m., Garrett Palm, 26, of Pierceton, called 911 and reported that his 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck had gone into the water in the 3800 block of East Wooster Road, Winona Lake.

Deputies with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Winona Lake Police Department were on the scene within five minutes, according to KCSO Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Francis.

Officers made contact with Palm, who was still inside his pickup truck, which was in approximately 3 feet of water, Francis said.

Firefighters with Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory put on drysuits and entered the water to assist Palm by lowering down a ladder to him, according to WWFT PIO Max Kinsey. Palm was not injured and climbed up the ladder and up the bank on his own, Kinsey said.

Damage is estimated at less than $5,000.

Police reported that Wooster Road was covered in ice at the time of the wreck.

Winona Lake Police Department, KCSO, the KCSO Dive Team, WWFT and Lutheran EMS responded to the scene.

The dive team member helped the wrecker crew with the removal of the pickup.
