Train Kills Mentone WomanMENTONE –A Mentone woman was killed when she was hit by a train Monday afternoon.
Mentone Police Department Town Marshal Jim Eads identified the woman as Patricia K. Appel, 39, of 301 E. Main St.
According to a news release from the MPD, initial investigation shows that Appel was walking west along the north side of Main Street and went to cross the street to the south side of Main at the railroad tracks.
Witnesses said Appel appeared to not be aware the train was approaching as she walked across the street. They said she was wearing headphones at the time of the accident.
Appel was hit by the train and suffered the fatal injuries.
Along with MPD, the Mentone Fire Department and Four-Way Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
Other agencies assisting in the investigation were Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police and Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.
