Tornado Victims

Editor, Times-Union:

My family and I moved to Warsaw from Haviland, Kan., in 2002. Greensburg is just nine miles west of Haviland. I was vice president for student services at Barclay College in Haviland. Many of our staff and students lived in Greensburg. We did business in Greensburg, and I preached at a church there for several months while they were seeking a new pastor. We know many of the people who lost everything in this tornado.

There were homes outside of Greensburg and just north into another county that were also destroyed. These people may not be eligible for FEMA relief or other help, because they did not live in Kiowa County or in Greensburg. There were many who lived in apartments that did not have renters insurance. There were also many elderly whose homes were not adequately insured for such a loss.

I hope people in our community will help. The Haviland Friends Church has set up a special relief fund to help these people. I know the two men who will administer these funds. One has a large farm/ranch and the other is the president of one of the banks that was destroyed in Greensburg. These two men are men of great integrity. You can be certain your gift will go to those that need it most. You may make your check out to: Haviland Friends Church Disaster Fund and mail it to Haviland Friends Church, 205 N. Kingman St., P.O. Box 246, Haviland, Kansas 67059. The Haviland Friends Church, along with Barclay College, has become the relief effort headquarters. The church is presently housing dozens of Samaritan's Purse workers and the college is housing the homeless. Please use this excellent resource to get your generous gifts to the people most needing your help.
