MENTONE — The termination of Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation’s athletic director was approved Monday during the school board meeting.
Sam Sturtevant was previously put on administrative leave, according to a statement Oct. 10 from TVSC. According to the statement, the school corporation is working closely with the Kosciusko County Sherriff’s Office and requested assistance from the Indiana State Board of Accounts as part of this process.
No further information was provided at Monday night’s meeting.
Also during the meeting, the school board voted on the budget presented at the Sept. 9 school board meeting.
The capital project fund plan was approved 5-0.
The school bus replacement plan, which will have the district replace school buses between 2026 and 2030, was approved 5-0.
The resolution of appropriations and budget reduction resolution were both approved 5-0.
The board also voted 5-0 to allow $1,331,000 to be pulled from the rainy day fund for facility updates throughout TVSC, and $271,880 to be pulled from the education fund for educational materials.
In another matter, attendance has been steadily improving districtwide at TVSC. The district leadership team compared the attendance of week 16 of the school year over the past five years. They were surprised to find that 2022 had the largest number of absences, especially since 2021 was during Covid and the schools were contact tracing to prevent infections. Since 2022, the number of absent students has been consistently going down.
During the first quarter of the 2024-25 school year, high school unexcused absences totaled 292. In this current school year, there have been 186. Additionally, during the first quarter of 2024-25, the number of excused absences was 929. In this current school year, it is 766.
Staff attributed that to improved communication with students’ families.
In other business:
• The Akron Las Donas Club donated $250 for the Nurse's Fund.
• Construction is progressing at the school corporation.
• The Tippecanoe Valley High School weight room will be open to the community from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting in November.
The school will be holding an online auction of surplus items that will go live today. The link will be available on the TVSC website and Facebook.
