Tigers Get 3-0 ‘Home’ Win Over WawaseeSYRACUSE – Noah Burgh tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking four for Warsaw in its 3-0 home win over Wawasee in a Northern Lakes Conference at Warrior Field.
The game was moved to Syracuse because of wet grounds on the Warsaw campus and a need to get conference games completed after recent weather played havoc with the schedule.
Warsaw head coach Andy Manes was very happy with the pitching performance of junior Burgh.
“Noah was pitching well tonight, getting the complete game shutout,” Manes said. “You can’t ask for much more than that. He definitely battled tonight.
Tiger senior Matthew Shoemaker opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning off Wawasee’s Levi Brown. Later in the inning, sophomore Joey Springer scored on classmate Alex Light’s single.
“We knew their pitcher (Brown) is a good pitcher; he mixes speeds well and keeps hitters off balance,”?Manes said. “Matthew got a fastball right down the middle, and he did what he is supposed to do with it.
Senior Ian Glogovsky scored the final run in the fifth frame, coming around on fellow senior Liam Patton’s single. aaron Greene also doubled for the Tigers.
“Anytime you can get one on the board early, that’s a good thing,” the Tiger coach said. “Then we got a couple of timely hits and we needed them. I felt like we left a couple of runs out there, but Noah pitched real well and helped us out.”
Manes said he was happy with his team’s performance, especially compared with the first matchup with the Warriors, when Wawasee won 15-14 last month.
“We told the guys this was a stark contrast to the first game we played with them. Back then we walked way too many guys and made too many errors. We told them ‘hey, when we pitch well and we play defense, this can happen.’ All around, this was our best defensive performance.”
For Wawasee, Brown allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits in as many innings pitched. He struck out just one Tiger hitter, but walked only two.
Parker Young and Logan Adkins doubled, and Carter Woody singled twice for the Warriors.
Warsaw (5-10 overall, 2-5 NLC) will continue NLC play Friday at Goshen. Wawasee (7-6, 3-4 NLC) travels to Elkhart Memorial for a conference game Friday.
