Tiger Basketball

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

After reading the sports section of last Saturday's Times-Union, I feel compelled to write this letter.

The sports coverage our paper provides for our local high school was very disappointing. After our high school basketball team won one of the biggest games of the year and ended their regular season with an 18-2 record, I was looking forward to reading the headlines in the the sports section of the Times-Union. But sadly, there were no headlines, no pictures, and no accolades whatsoever for the Tigers, who just finished the regular season with the second best record in school history.

In previous editorials, our sports editor has been clear about his opposition to Coach Ogle and his coaching philosophy, and while it is regrettable that Warsaw teams are relegated to the small print in the sports section every week, it seems unprofessional that our local paper would not give the team and the coaches the credit they deserve for a great year.

Regardless, I would like to congratulate the Warsaw basketball team and Coach Ogle on an outstanding year and wish them the best of luck in the upcoming sectional tournament.

Editor's Note: Times-Union Sports Editor Dale Hubler attended the Friday night game in Fort Wayne the letter writer references. A 30-column-inch game narrative with full box score was published in Saturday's edition. The story was placed on the front page of the sports section in a tint box, consuming the entire lefthand column. The Times-Union has staffed every Tiger basketball game this year - home and away. Tiger Nic Moore was featured as our Player of the Year for the second consecutive year on the cover of our annual sectional preview section.
