The Portal

Editor, Times-Union:
If you have not downloaded and read the rules, etc. with respect to the college Transfer Portal you should take the time now. Do it before another season of your favorite sport passes.
Make no mistake the requirements are quite liberal. It surprises me the NCAA endorses the plan given the associations tight opposition to things involving athlete pay over the years.
One thing is certain: Old-fashioned college competition is gone forever. Just as one winner Hoosier Hysteria a few years ago, poooff! Take National Basketball Champion Michigan for example. Were not the entire starting five seniors first-year portal recruits? Plus two foreigners?
Of course, IU's football championship came via basically the same route this year. It's only fair to remember that as well.
Rivalries as we knew it are gone. Why not? The players never set foot on the campus until the starting tip-off for the first game. They are, quite simply, the hired hands. These athletes play where they can make the most money plus a scholarship. Athletic directors are licking their collective chops at the box office.
Amateur sports have died and there was no ceremony, no tears shed. Lots of new agents getting a cut, too. "Show me the money."
I'm a fan and a former newspaper sports writer back in the day who is damned sorry it has taken place.
