The Olde House Antique Store In Silver Lake Now Offering Baked GoodsSILVER LAKE – The Olde House in Silver Lake has sold antiques and primitives for over a year, but recently expanded to include a bakery.
A grand opening for The Olde House Bakery & Gift Shoppe, 608 N. Jefferson St., is planned for May 17-18, according to owner Rebecca Whiteman.
“We’re pretty new. ... I know people are still finding me, especially Warsaw people, because unless you’re coming south you probably wouldn’t know it’s here,” she said.
Whiteman said she decided to run her business full time and expand to include a bakery after Carson’s in Warsaw closed.
“I worked at Carson’s and I was a manger there for 18 years, and obviously recently they closed the store. I had already opened (The Olde House) and I was working (at Carson’s) too, so I was doing both, and then when it closed I had to make a decision. So I decided to do this full time and baking has always kind of been my thing,” she said.
It felt like a good opportunity to her to make some changes and add something that would draw people in who normally weren’t into primitives and gift shops. Baked goods sounded like a good draw.
“We do cookies and cupcakes, custom, of course. We’ll have pies. Rolls ... scones, cakepops, big bakery cakes, sheet cakes. Doing wedding cakes is not really what I want to do but I can do graduation cakes and things like that,” she said.
The bakery will have items available, but specific baked goods can be ordered.
“Phone ahead orders are definitely welcome,” she stated. “What I want people to know is I bake for all occasions.”
She is making fire hydrant cookies for the Silver Lake Fire Department’s fundraiser this weekend. She also provided a frosted Mother’s Day cookie that she made in advance for this weekend.
Whiteman is a self-taught baker, but said she’s “pretty good.”
“We’re definitely, obviously small,” she said of her business. “We’re family owned and we’re very custom.”
As for prices, she said The Olde House is very comparable to Betty’s Cake & Candy Shop in Warsaw.
“I’ve kind of done my homework just to see what’s out there. Now that Maple Lane is closed, I’m hoping to be able to pick up some of their pie business as well,”?Whiteman said.
Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Phone number is 260-802-1346; email is Theoldehouse@yahoo.com; and it has a Facebook page.
“Advanced notice for customers would be a plus,” she said.
