Technology Dependence

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

As a society we are coming to be completely dependent on technology. Think of it: at the bank, at the gas pump, at the grocery store, nearly everywhere that money changes hands we use technology and the Internet.

Our children may ultimately suffer most. They need to be taught to do things manually first and not be so dependent.

There is, of course, a need for the computer as an information tool, but, to replace tried and true methods of teaching with computer screen teaching is not right. Only after they have mastered (or nearly so) the "3 Rs" and the other needed classes for a good education, should they be taught the shortcuts of technology.

One teenage child that I know asked me for help on a math problem. I looked and said you must multiply. He said, I can't, I didn't bring my calculator.

Although this may not be typical, no child should be left behind this way. It is unacceptable.

What if, for any conceivable reason, computers fail? Young people won't know how to do anything for themselves.

Kids are losing both mental and physical acuity. I guess they are getting strong thumbs and fingers. Is that a good trade?
