Taxes

Editor, Times-Union:

On TV they were talking about different ideas to eliminate the present tax. I think it has too much room for fraud. Employees can ask to be paid in cash and then not report their earnings. I think I have heard really rich people live sometime overseas and sometime in our country. They buy a home overseas and rent in our country. Oh yes, some don't pay for many years and then hire a lawyer to settle for much less. What a game. The government gets cheated. Let's have a fair tax. One when everyone pays its fair portion.

Let's suppose the government now gets "x" number of dollars each year. Let's have a federal sales tax collected by the states. Let's have the tax so it will be equal and bring to the government the same "x" dollars it now gets. Each state is to collect and send their portion to the government. Instead of the 7 percent we pay now, it may be 7-1/2 or 8 percent. With that plan, the government will get even more than now because there will be no cheating and everyone pays its portion. Oh, the accountants may not like the plan. I heard there is now a shortage of accountants, so that will take care of them.

Oh, I expect objections from many corners. The devil is strong and he loves to encourage cheating. Our God can do "all things." He is stronger than the devil. I suggest that everyone should pray to God for an honest federal income tax. Also, write your Congressmen to make a bill and to pass it. That would give our president a lift also if he would get behind it and sign. Democrats, here is your chance to shine.
