ELKHART COUNTY - A Syracuse man drowned Monday in a private pond while attempting to rescue his dog.
The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office confirmed today that Phillip L. Hoover, 69, Syracuse, died as a result of accidental drowning in a private pond in the 70000 block of CR 29.
Preliminary investigation concluded that at an unknown time on Monday, Dec. 1, Hoover fell into the pond as he attempted to rescue his dog that had fallen through the ice, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 4 p.m. Monday, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 70000 block of CR 29 for a report of an adult male falling through the ice on a private pond.
Emergency crews recovered the man from the pond and transported him to Goshen General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Emergency personnel were able to rescue the dog, which had no apparent signs of injury.
Final reports are pending for the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
