A Syracuse man recently was arrested for allegedly strangling and battering his pregnant girlfriend.
Martin Lewis Hagerman, 26, of 11523 N. Elm Grove Drive, Apt. A, Syracuse, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:41 p.m. Saturday and faces charges for domestic battery to a pregnant woman, a Level 5 felony; domestic battery causing serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony; criminal confinement, a Level 5 felony; strangulation, a Level 6 felony; and intimidation, a Level 6 felony.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Nov. 18 in Kosciusko Superior Court I, at 4:32 a.m. Oct. 24 police were dispatched to Goshen General Hospital regarding a domestic battery that had occurred at a Kosciusko County home.
Upon arrival at the hospital, police spoke with a woman who said she was just beaten up by her boyfriend after they had returned home around 1 a.m. from being out.
The woman told police Hagerman was drunk and when they got home, he asked her for a trash can to puke in. According to court papers, Hagerman puked “everywhere except the trash can” and so the woman helped him into the shower to clean up. As Hagerman was in the shower, the woman was cleaning up the vomit when, according to court papers, Hagerman came out and accused her of cheating on him.
The woman went to leave the home several times but during each attempt Hagerman would prevent her from leaving, took her keys and her phone and slapped her several times, at one point choking her until she passed out, according to the affidavit.
Hagerman also allegedly pushed the woman into the refrigerator and threatened to kill her before she ever left him.
According to court papers, police observed injuries on the woman that included swelling of her face, a swollen lip, a cut inside her mouth, marks on her neck from being choked and bruising on both arms and legs.
Hagerman’s bond was set at $11,000, and a no contact order was put in place.
