Super Committee's Failure

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
The news services are all reporting that the much-hyped “Super Committee” has failed, I disagree. The fact that they could not reach an agreement concerning where and how to cut the enormous federal budget is only surprising to those living under the proverbial rock. Congress, and more specifically a committee made up of members of Congress, is doomed to failure. In my opinion very few, if any of them, have the slightest idea what it is like to live in the real world, a world where most of us are expected (rightly so) to maintain control of our finances. Now the true political circus can begin, the blame game. Fortunately, and in spite of monumental pressure not to do so, the passage of this last raise of the debt ceiling had a stipulation of automatic cuts. I do not think they are near deep enough but at least it is a start.

I know that some of these cuts are likely to be hurtful to people who do not deserve to be hurt. I personally may feel some of the hurt myself or through members of my family. This is no longer a game we can afford to play (literally), it is time to put on the grown-up pants and get serious. I hope that someone anyone in D.C. gets it together and starts making real decisions. If those decisions affect me and mine so be it, my family will do what we can to help each other out and we will get by. Do you know what the funny part is? We will become stronger for it. I hope you all decide to do the same thing. I truly believe our nation is in a fight for survival. It is time to remember our roots and get tough by doing the right thing: Stop spending money we do not have.
