Sroufe, Sickafoose Lead Whitko To Victory In Opener

COLUMBIA CITY – The Whitko basketball team won a close one Wednesday.
The Wildcats began their season with a 60-58 win over Columbia City.
Spencer Sroufe led Whitko (1-0) with 20 points, while Brett Sickafoose scored 19.
Whitko was down 21-19 by the end of the first quarter before taking a 33-30 lead by halftime.
The Wildcats were down by 6 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Eagles (0-1) 22-14 for the victory.
Drake Lewis scored 14 points for Whitko, while Micah Cokl added five points and Devin Blaine chipped in two.
Whitko will open its Three Rivers Conference schedule 7:45 p.m. Nov. 30 at Wabash.
Trojans Roll To Victory
HAMLET – A big third quarter propelled the Triton boys basketball team to a season-opening, 42-38 victory Wednesday at Oregon-Davis.
The Trojans (1-0) already held a double-digit lead when they outscored the Bobcats (0-1) 16-2 in the third quarter for a 48-24 lead they rode to victory in the fourth.
Aston Oviedo led all scorers with 15 points, and also pulled down eight rebounds for the Trojans.
Triton’s Jared Bules added 11 points, while Tye Orsund and Beau Hepler scored eight points each.
NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester wrestling team opened its season with a 47-28 home win Tuesday over Peru in a Three Rivers Conference match.
Seven Manchester wrestlers won by fall, including Dylan Stroud at 132 pounds, Johnny England (152), Delton Moore (170), and Trescott Duffy (182 pounds).
Ashton Moore (195), Joseph Irons (220) and Bryce Kamphues (285) also won by fall for the Squires.
Manchester’s Ethan McWilliams won 6-5 in the 106-pound match, while Kevin Morales (145) earned an 8-1 victory.
Trevor Dill (220) and Jacob Caudill (195) picked up wins in the JV match.
The Squires will host the Wabash County Tournament at 9 a.m. Dec. 1.
