Spraying Issue

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I read with interest your coverage of Tuesday's meeting of the Kosciusko County commissioners. I am the resident that filed the complaint regarding the spraying of chemicals along my property that has resulted in medical problems and loss of crops.

Your reporter made a big point of the fact that I "wasn't at the meeting to make a public comment." Here is my public comment.

The truth is that not one person in the Kosciusko County government bothered to contact me about the intent to discuss the spraying situation at the Sept. 1 meeting. I have heard absolutely nothing about my complaint since Aug. 4, 2009. As of the writing of this letter, Dennis Pletcher has not acknowledged any e-mail that I have sent to him since Aug. 4 and still has not provided me with the information about the contractor so that I can recover my expenses. I cannot comment on what the county is proposing because the only thing that I know about it was what you put in your newspaper.

It is my understanding that you have to contact Marsha McSherry by noon on Friday before the meeting in order to be put on the agenda for the meeting. Where is the proposed subject matter for the meeting published and when? If the public does not know what subjects are going to be discussed at the meeting, how do they know if they want to be put on the agenda to comment on a subject?

In this day of high technology, is it too much to ask that the proposed subject matter of the commissioners and council meetings be posted on the Kosciusko County government's Web site, at least a week prior to the meeting, so that the public can decide if they want to attend and/or make comments?

I just checked the Kosciusko County government Web site to see what was said in the Sept. 1 meeting and there was nothing there. The most recent commissioners meeting minutes was from July.
