Speed Traps

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I grew up driving in this county on the country roads, and you learn to gage your speed by what the safe driving speed of the road is and not so much by the speed limit. All unmarked county roads are by default 55 speed limit, but there are many that I wouldn't go that fast on.

That being said, and based on my 30 years of driving experience, I would say that the "natural speed" of a road like CR 250N, running down the south edge of the Warsaw airport, would be about 50. There isn't much traffic from the businesses on the south side of the road because they aren't retail businesses, and there are only a few residents. On the north side of the road, there isn't any access and there's a tall fence that discourages deer traffic. The marked speed limit of CR 250N is however only 40.

Now I understand that the difference in travel time isn't an issue on a road that is only one mile long, but if you're the average driver, you really have to watch your speedometer to keep it down to 40. The police know it, too. They are out there all the time pulling people over and it's not because there are a lot of accidents on that road, it's because they can raise revenue. Even the state police get in on the action.

I say shame on you police officers that prey on good drivers in this way. It's dishonest and it puts a bad light on good police officers. You might be thinking that I'm just some peeved-off fellow that got a ticket, but you're wrong. I haven't got one there yet. I'm almost sure that I will sometime though, because I'll be paying attention to my driving and not my speedometer.
