Spartan Gridiron Trio Earn Conference HonorsCARMEL  – Manchester University football swept the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards on Monday afternoon.

Donavan Henderson, Jr., Devontay Moore, and Andrew Kibler all garnered Player of the Week honors, the league office announced.

Henderson, Jr. was named the HCAC Offensive Player of the Week after a record setting performance against the Yellow Jackets.  Henderson rushed for a school record five touchdowns in Thursday's 52-21 dominating win at Defiance College. Donavan carried the ball 21 times and racked up 139 yards rushing.  Henderson rushed for TDs of 29-yards, 26-yards, 4-yards, 3-yards, and 1-yard against the Yellow Jackets.  He is the school's all-time rushing TD leader and the all-time leader in TDs by a non-QB with 40 and is just 575 yards shy of MU's all-time rushing record that was set back in the 1970s.

Freshman Devontay Moore earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Moore led the Spartans with 11 total tackles in Manchester's 52-21 win. Moore racked up a pair of sacks for 18 yards and finished Thursday's game with 2.5 tackles-for-loss for 21 yards.  Moore also blocked a punt in the first quarter that would eventually lead to a Spartan field goal.

Sophomore Andrew Kibler was a perfect 7-7 on extra point attemptsin the win over Defiance. Kibler  also made his first field goal attempt of the 2019 season in the first quarter of Thursday's game, making a 32-yarder.  Kibler also punted three times for 99 yards and placed one punt inside the 20-yard line.

The Spartans will host Rose-Hulman at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Burt Field  as HCAC play begins.



Wappes Named HCAC Runner of the Week

CARMEL – For the fifth time in her storied career, senior Hannah Wappes earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Monday September 23.

 Wappes added yet another top 10 finish this season by placing fifth overall in a field of 103 runners at the Bullock Invitational hosted by Taylor University on Friday. Wappes finished with a time of 18.49, another new personal best for her and the eighth best time in program history in a 5K event.

Earlier this month, Wappes placed seventh overall in a field of 200 of the top runners in the Great Lakes region at the Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin. Wappes crossed the finish line with a time of 22.12.2 – 34 seconds faster than her previous career-best set last year.  Wappes' time at the Knight Invitational was also the fourth-best time in Manchester University history in a 6k race.

The Manchester cross country programs will be off this weekend before returning to action at the Louisville Classic.
