SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, South Whitley Town Council added a new member, Kris Shoemaker, who was sworn in by Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple and was immediately appointed as council vice president.
Knepple also completed the swearing-in of Bobby, the South Whitley Police Department's new K-9 officer. Bobby is a Belgian Malinois.
In old business, council amended an earlier approval of a well replacement not to exceed $39,038. A new quote from Peerless Midwest, Inc. was $55,535, including both the new well and piping work, which was approved.
Council also approved a $12,935.57 quote for repairs to the sewage vac truck.
In new business, council approved a resolution to allow Knepple to pay large vendor bills with electronic funds transfers rather than with physical checks, and approved the future deposit of the 2026 Commercial Vehicle Excise Tax (CVET) funds into the town's rainy day fund.
Council approved 2026 regular meeting dates, which will remain scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
Council approved a 3-percent employee raise, which reflects what was approved in the 2026 salary schedule.
Knepple said a new program is coming modeled on Bloomington's "Snow Buddies" initiative, which allows local volunteers to be paired with elderly individuals who request help with seasonal snow removal. Knepple said a signup form will be on the town's website soon.
Town Marshal Chad Schipper said the department is purchasing four new shotguns for $4,800 and a drone from the Whitley County Sheriff's Department for $3,000.
Council recognized Veterans Day and thanked veterans for their service.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 25.
