SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council voted to hire Chad Schipper as the new town marshal for the South Whitley Police Department, effective June 30.
The current marshal, Mikel Vandevender, will be taking the open school resource officer position at Whitko Community School Corporation. Vandevender will work as SRO and deputy marshal in the department at $31.49 per hour.
Schipper will start at $38.46 per hour with eight weeks of vacation.
Council President Brock Waterson asked town attorney Greg Hockemeyer to draw up a six-year contract for Schipper, guaranteeing that his wage cannot decrease.
Councilmember Randy Cokl thanked Vandevender for his years of service as town marshal. Vandevender served as the town marshal for 10 years, and has served for the South Whitley Police Department for 23 years.
In other business, council:
• Heard a Park Board update from Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple. The board installed pet waste stations at multiple locations across town and placed cornhole boards at the LeBrun pocket park.
• Approved an INDOT street sweeper contract.
• Approved utility adjustments for two residents.
• Approved Fall Festival street closures for Sept. 25–28.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. June 24. Schipper will be sworn in at that meeting.
