SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council heard about several upcoming events happening in town, including the library's Summer Reading kickoff on June 6 and the Amvets Bike Night on June 20 requiring street closures.
Maple Street from Columbia to Front will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6 for the kickoff event at South Whitley Community Public Library.
Council also approved the closure of Slater Drive from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 20 for a Bike Night at Amvets. The band CRS will perform and there will be a bake sale and auction, with all proceeds going to Vicki Benfer, who is battling stage four esophageal cancer.
In public input, council heard of two other upcoming events. Amvets is holding a $25 buy-in poker game at 1 p.m. June 6, with a 60-40 split for winnings. Sixty percent of winnings will go to Benfer and 40% will go to the winner.
Amvets is also holding a cornhole tournament at 5 p.m. July 18, with registration opening at 4 p.m. with a cost of $20 per person.
In other business, council heard from Terry Eberly and Jen Krider, who recently opened The Press Room at 113 S. State St. A power surge burned out a dishwasher and a music amp, and Eberly says the transformer behind the building has been replaced.
Council President Brock Waterson and Utilities Superintendent Kent Slater said they would look into it. Town attorney Gregg Hockemeyer advised that the town is not legally held responsible for an "act of God" but council could choose to help local businesses as a gesture of goodwill.
Waterson thanked Eberly and Krider for their investment in the town.
Council also:
• Heard a request for a new memorial brick from Rebecca Sand.
• Approved a utilities adjustment for $208.14.
• Heard an update from Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple that the new utility billing cards are in, with correct codes.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. May 26.
