SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council approved changes to the police department including improved holiday pay, gym memberships for officers and on-call hour wage adjustments.
Town Marshal Chad Schipper presented multiple items to the council. Schipper said officers are currently paid eight hours of holiday pay even if they work more than eight hours on a holiday, and the hourly wage for local on-call officers is $20 per hour while out-of-town officers receive $25 per hour for on-call hours.
Council approved an on-call hourly wage of $25 per hour for all officers and holiday hours equal to the hours worked rather than the flat eight hours pay.
Schipper also asked if the department could purchase monthly gym memberships for the six officers. Council approved an allowance of up to $2,500 per year for the memberships.
