Reader, you and I are souls. We have bodies. Our bodies are houses in which lives our souls. When Oliver Wendell Holmes was in his eighties, one day a friend hailed him "how are you?" He responded "I'm fine. The house I live in is more feeble, tottering and weakening, but Oliver Wendell Holmes is fine."
Golden moments of earthly living time are given to us for God's glory. If we use them wisely they are woven into the fabric of eternity by God's omnipotent hand. Thomas Carlyle said "He who has no vision of eternity, has no hold on time." A plague on the wall of some homes read "Only one life "twill soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last".
Much money, time, and effort is expended to perpetuate our physical and mental lives. Too many of us are unconcerned about our spiritual health and nurture. We feed our bodies three or more times a day, but our souls have become feeble, shriveled up like a prune, and are starving. Those of us who claim to be Christians know our lack of spiritual strength and are not seeking it. We have heard Jesus say,"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6.
As one wrote "You can put a public school or college or university in the middle of the block of every city in America, but you will never keep our country from rotting morally by intellectual education." Education which neglects the most important part of man's nature, the spiritual, cannot properly be called education at all. Education, little or much, without moral control from spiritual health, is dangerous. It simply creates educated pagans.
When God created man He created us different from other animals, "He breathed on us the breath of life and we became living souls." God gave us intelligence, conscience, and will. He made us to be companions, friends of His, today and in eternity.
Like Oliver Wendell Holmes said it,"I'm fine." He has put on immortality and so shall we. Join me in glorifying God now and forever! The Bible reads "You shall seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Deuteronomy 4:29. Let's do it!
