SILVER LAKE – At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council voted 2-0 to rezone the High Street site for the town's upcoming community center from residential to public use, with Council member Jean Weller absent.
In old business, property owner Joseph Barnes's variance request was approved. Barnes told council he has hired a new contractor, will install a 4-inch drainage culvert and is repainting the shed on the property.
In new business, council opened two bids for mowing services: Davey Resource Group at $250 per hour with a four-hour minimum, and Eric and Daughter's Garden Tilling of Milford at $60 per hour.
Council voted to accept the bid with Eric and Daughter's Garden Tilling.
Council President Medard Murfin said he and Town Marshal Jason McGlennen have been working together on ordinance violators and several junk cars have been removed from town.
In other business, council:
• Heard McGlennen is researching proper compensation for K-9 handlers who feed and care for the dog at home.
• Heard the utilities department will begin tree trimming in a few weeks, pending weather.
Council member Nichole Taylor asked Utilities Superintendent Joey McNeal about the tree on the tree lawn next to Subway.
• Approved a claims docket of $242,293.96 which includes the tornado siren and payments for the water and sewer bonds.
Council also approved an additional $1,200 in bills that came in after the claims were prepared.
• Approved leak letters for two residents, totaling $630.53.
Council reminded the public that the clerk’s office will be closed July 13–15 for State Board of Accounts training.
Council will next meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 12.
