Posted

SILVER LAKE – At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council heard from Jim Hoch on the community center project, which is in the early stages of construction.
Hoch said the building pad is being constructed now and the property passed a load bearing pressure test. A pre-engineered steel frame is set to arrive on-site Oct. 13 and building erection should begin around Oct. 22, Hoch said.
There was one change order to the project, resulting from modifications to the foundation once building frame plans were set with the steel company who won the project bid. Council approved the change order, which totaled $14,831.31.
In old business, council approved updates to the salary ordinance regarding the care of the town's K-9 officer.
In new business, council approved resolutions for reduced appropriations of the 2026 budget, and for corresponding appropriation transfers.
Council set trick-or-treat hours for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
In citizens' comments, council heard town resident and former Kosciusko County police officer Travis Bays praise the work of the Silver Lake Police Department and Chief Deputy Cole Williams on drug control and enforcement.
Fire Chief John Conley reported four runs since last month: two medical assists, one accident and one alarm.
Utilities Superintendent Joey McNeal said he is looking for pond meter screen quotes.
In other business, council:
• Signed the 2027 election and interlocal agreements.
• Approved forms that must be submitted to council for overtime hours in excess of 10 hours.
• Approved an invoice for the community center totaling $546,693.90, to be covered by an Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) grant.
• Approved a claims docket of $173,547.21.
Council will next meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 for a 2027 budget hearing, followed by a Rockwell vacation public hearing and the regular monthly meeting.
