Shriver Named Tippecanoe Valley’s ‘Teacher Of The Year’MENTONE – Tippecanoe Valley High School special education teacher Cami Shriver was awarded the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation Teacher of the Year Award Monday.
The Indiana Department of Education conducts the Indiana Teacher of the Year program to recognize “outstanding classroom teachers from across the state,” according to information provided at the information. The Indiana Teacher of the Year is then selected to represent Indiana teachers at the national level in accordance with National Teacher of the Year guidelines.
The building Teachers of the Year were selected last fall. Shriver was selected as the building Teacher of the Year for TVHS while Kamry Sands was selected for Mentone Elementary, Hayley Whitaker for Akron Elementary and Keaton Bell for Tippecanoe Valley Middle School.
Each candidate was then invited to complete a portfolio, which is a requirement to be considered for the corporation’s Teacher of the Year. Inga Omondi, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, said three of the four teachers presented their portfolio. The candidate with the portfolio receiving the highest cumulative score was named the corporation’s Teacher of the Year.
A video was shown on why each teacher was chosen as the building Teacher of the Year and was a nominee for the corporation’s Teacher of the Year.
In the video, TVHS Principal Brandon Kresca said Shriver has a tremendous impact on the school, students and staff. Everyone looks up to and admires her.
Shriver has a tremendous influence on education in the school corporation in the ways she’s involved in bettering the school, he said.
Vice Principal Dayna Kolanowski said Shriver tries to find a connection with all students at the high school.
In other business, the board:
• Heard Cultural Night is in the TVHS commons from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 4.
• Listened as Superintendent Blaine Conley recognized Ed Rock, who retired as the county Emergency Management Agency director March 30, for the work he has done to help keep the schools safe.
• Approved a $2,500 grant for the Tippecanoe Valley Middle School Viking Vittles program.
• Heard third-graders Levi Adam, Remington Bouse and Lylah Cody earned perfect scores on the iRead test.
Mentone Elementary Principal Randy Dahms said this is the first year second-graders were able to take the iRead test.
Second-graders Emma Egolf, Sara Taelman and Brinkley Waldo also received perfect scores.
• Head the Mentone Elementary Spell Bowl team started with 14 students on the team this year. They had an invitational competition against Akron Elementary, which Akron won.
During a regional competition, Mentone won second place after Akron Elementary.
Akron Elementary went on to state and won 12th place.
• Heard Mentone Elementary has two math teams - a fourth-grade and a fifth-grade team. Both teams had an invitational against Akron Elementary School where the fifth-grade team lost to Akron and the fourth-grade team won against the fourth-grade team from Akron.
During the regional competition, both teams from Mentone won first place.
During state, the fifth-grade team placed 21st and the fourth-grade team placed 19th.
