Sheriff

Editor, Times-Union:

Did I make a mistake voting for our sheriff last election? I felt he was the best pick of the litter, even though they were all runts. Here is what I have been through with our "self-proclaimed" detective, sheriff.

In March, we had a theft on our property, which was under construction. Our contractor's trailer was broken in to as was my barn. When we called the sheriff's office, they had the courtesy to send a descendant of Barney Fife. What we have since learned of our "ace" detectives is if they ask questions and don't write down the responses. You didn't say it! Now think about that one!

Fast forward to three weeks ago. I was fortunate enough to be broken into again. When it was reported, it wasn't Barney Fife they sent out, it was an ethnic version of Ace Ventura Pet Detective. The only difference between the movie's version of "Ace" and Kosciusko's version of "Ace" is our "Ace" is lacking common sense and courtesy.

After a visit and two calls to the sheriff's office (by the way, no one had time to see me), they had Aunt Bee call and tell me her side of the story. Not only did she insinuate I had lied, but I was told all they could do was put it on Crime Stoppers.

Now, here is the best part. The same day she had called to tell me this, our insurance adjuster located our stolen property in storage at a local body shop. It was found the next day after it had been stolen. Lucky me - right! Yep, the only problem is since they have had it that long and they neglected to call, I was left with a $400 storage bill. Had the morons called when it was recovered, it would have cost $20, which brings us to the obvious conclusion. Is our sheriff that ignorant, arrogant, corrupt, worried about extra sugar on his doughnuts, all of the above?

I was told second hand an apology was coming. I haven't seen it yet. But please save the hot air and pay my $400 bill after all this fiasco. I wonder if I would pay my property taxes with doughnuts if I would get better service?

My wife has suggested not to write this letter to the editor as she thinks our sheriff might retaliate. I don't think so but if they do, I'll keep you all posted.

Back to the election of the sheriff next term. I don't think I will vote for him again. According to my wife, we obviously share the same qualities: don't communicate well, arrogant, ignorant, repulsive, like sweets, make a mess when I brush my teeth.

I'm not sure of our sheriff's dental hygiene or bathroom cleanliness, however, feel pretty certain that the remaining qualities do not make either of us a good choice for sheriff.
