Saving On Electricity

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
Back in the 1980s, I worked for a business just south of U.S. 30. The ladies in the kitchen kept the radio on to WLS in Chicago.
One morning, their on-air host, Larry Lujack, was talking about how he tries to save money on his electric bills; and he told listeners that, whenever he was finished watching television, he would unplug the television from the electrical outlet because, as he put it, a color television, if turned “off,” still uses electricity as long as it is still plugged in to an electrical outlet.
I found truth in that statement after moving in to my apartment here in Warsaw. I used to leave the TV plugged in when I went to bed and the bill from NIPSCO would be somewhere over $120-plus, if not higher ... winter or not! Per month!
In the months following the choice to “unplug,” the electric bills went down, below $100.
I also made the choice to turn the heat off in the bedroom and sleep in the living room, instead.
Whatever it takes to cut costs, it is truly worth the sacrifices.
Just wish I had though of this 30+ years ago!
