NORTH MANCHESTER – Ruth N. Kurtz, 92, of North Manchester, died at 6:20 p.m. July 24, 2011, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
She was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Whitley County, to Lee R. and Jennie C. Royer Smith. On Sept. 2, 1951, she married Alton Robert Kurtz, who died June 29, 1983.
She worked at Cooperative Extension Service of Minnesota from 1949-51. She taught in various high schools in Ohio and Indiana from 1941-49 and taught at Bridgewater College, Virginia. She gave much time in service to church, college and community activities in Defiance, Ohio; Spring Arbor, Mich.; and finally as a resident at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester. She resided in Defiance from 1953-74, Spring Arbor from 1974-85 and Timbercrest Senior Living Community since 1985. She was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren. She graduated Chester High School in 1937 and Manchester College in 1941.
Surviving are three daughters: Rachel (and spouse Bob) Gross, North Manchester; Beth (and spouse Francois) Kurtz-Costes, Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Sarah (and spouse Jim Bernard) Kurtz, Golden, Colo.; a son, Stanley Kurtz, Morelia, Mexico; a brother, Lee Smith Jr., North Manchester; two sisters, Frances Anderson, Elkhart, and Martha Colace, North Manchester; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death y three brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester. Burial will be in Ulrey Cemetery, Silver Lake.
Calling is from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Timbercrest.
