INDIANAPOLIS – Robert P. “Bob” Roberts, 92, died recently.
He was born May 15, 1919, in Ironton, Ohio, to Robert J. and Lila Ferrie Roberts. On June 12, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, he married Kathleen Hann, who died April 17, 1998.
He was raised in Columbus, Ohio, where he attended the Cathedral School and Aquinas High School for boys. He came to Indianapolis to attend Butler University where he was captain of the football team and president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. During World War II, he served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater. After the war, he and his wife returned to Indianapolis where he graduated from Butler and began his long career in the food brokerage business and owned Roberts Brokerage Co. While raising their six children, he and his wife were members of Christ the King and St. Joan of Arc parishes. When they retired to their lake house they were active members of St. Francis Catholic Church, Pierceton.
He was a life member of Wolf Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4717, Disabled Veterans, American Legion North Webster Post 253 and was past commander of Kennington American Legion Post 32. In addition, he was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, an original sponsor of the Indianapolis Police Motorcycle Drill team and president of the Indiana Manufacturers Association.
Surviving are three sons, G. Michael (and spouse Janice), Robert P. (and spouse Deborah) and Patrick J. (and spouse Katherine), all of Indianapolis; three daughters: Mary K. (and spouse George) Nelson Houston, Texas; Judy (and spouse D. Keith) Vasey Champaign, Ill.; and Maureen (and spouse Kirk) Morris, Colorado City, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. They considered each one a special treasure to which they imparted their values of faith, family and friends. He delighted in attending christenings, birthdays, graduations, weddings and especially sporting events of his grandchildren all over the country. He also was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy, who died in 1956.
The family would like to thank everyone at St. Augustine’s, the Little Sister of the Poor who treated their dad with such dignity and love.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be in North Webster.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, Indianapolis.
