Remembering

Editor, Times-Union:
Just so you are aware, I have no friends who are not anti-war.
I remember our neighbor banging on our front door to announce the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, uncles and cousins all around who were killed in the South Pacific or Europe. I remember, too, our first family friend brought home from Korea in a flag-draped casket. I have friends who died in Vietnam.
Everyone should be anti-war, but at some point in time it becomes necessary to dig one’s heels into the turf and refuse to be run over by zealous folks who are hell-bent on the destruction of the United States. Are those folks any worse than war itself? Are their reasons not also selfish and self-serving?
Is the military/industrial complex in America too powerful? Probably. But, so too are many politicians, more interested in their own personal power, prestige and wealth.
There are many things “wrong” with where this country has been heading for the past several decades. However, those of us who desire to protect what is left had not ought to have to put up with childish name calling by some. Common courtesy is needed. I prefer to look for solutions. When you’ve had bullets whiz passed your head, there is a tendency to want to shoot back.
