In the past week, you probably have heard on local radio and seen in the Times-Union ads for the annual K-REMC meeting. I want to encourage all K-REMC customers/members to attend the annual meeting this coming Saturday at Warsaw Community Church. Many learning activities are scheduled for all ages. The doors open at 8:30 a.m.; business election of officers at 10 a.m., with great entertainment to follow.
The electric cooperative system in Indiana and across the United States is a great success story. This is because the owners of our local K-REMC are those of us who pay our electric bill every month. It is our privilege to vote for the board members that you feel will best serve our K-REMC for the long term. If we as members/owners of the K-REMC do not exercise our privilege to vote, it will weaken the cooperative system which has been such a success across this great country.
Approximately eight of the last 10 years, I have been asked and it has been a privilege to serve on the K-REMC nominating committee. This committee is chosen by the nine members who are on the board of directors. As a nominating committee member, I want to encourage all K-REMC customers/members to attend and vote for the candidate that they feel will best serve your needs and lead us into the future.
When talking to many REMC customers/members, especially those that have never attended and voted at an annual meeting, many do not know exactly how the board works and what their terms are. The K-REMC has nine board members with a three-year term. Every year, three of the board members' term ends, and if he or she wants to run again they ask to have their name placed into nomination and run against a new nominee. The following is a list of our current K-REMC Board of Directors and the number of three-year terms that they have served. The board members with an asterisk before their name are the three that their three-year term is up.
Fred Powell - 11+
John Anglin - 10+
William Stump - 8+
Steve Miner - 8+
*Carl Sands - 7
Don Arnold - 6+
James Romine - 6+
*Terry Bouse - 3
*Tom Shively - 3
The slate of candidates to be voted on at this year's annual meeting is as follows.
Carl Sands opposed by Rick Parker
Terry Bouse opposed by Don Walther
Tom Shively opposed by David Metzger
As a nominating committee member, I feel that each of these candidates are capable of serving the K-REMC well, but is up to you as customers/members to cast your vote for the candidates that you feel will lead the K-REMC into the future.
If anyone thinks that their vote does not count, they are wrong. The only way that your vote won't count is if you do not vote.
I encourage all customers/members to attend the annual meeting, vote for the candidate of their choice and take advantage of the privilege to vote in this great cooperative system.
